City Saving Big on Energy Bills at New Public Works Building
Stoughton, Wis. – People in Stoughton had a chance to tour their city’s new public works building during a 5:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m. open house Thursday evening.
People might initially notice the facility’s size. At 89,000-square-feet, the new building on County Highway A is so big the old public works building could fit inside it. They likely will not notice the efficiency of the new building.
The City of Stoughton and its architect worked with FOCUS ON ENERGY®, Wisconsin’s statewide energy efficiency and renewable resources program, to design the building. The energy efficiency equipment and strategies in the public works facility earned the City nearly $40,000 in financial incentives from Focus on Energy and Stoughton Utilities, a member of WPPI Energy.
Those efficiency measures include:
• High-efficiency furnaces
• High-efficiency boiler
• Heating water system
• LED lighting and occupancy sensors
• Building envelope: efficient walls, roof and windows
With the financial incentive and more than $44,000 annually in energy cost savings, the energy-efficient equipment will pay for itself in less than seven years.
Representatives from Focus on Energy and Stoughton Utilities presented a ceremonial check to the City Thursday afternoon ahead of the official ribbon-cutting and open house.
The Focus on Energy program offers energy expertise and financial incentives to customers of the 107 Wisconsin utilities that partner in the program, including Stoughton Utilities and the Alliant Energy, which is the natural gas utility for the City at the new building. The City of Stoughton has participated in eight Focus on Energy projects since 2013.
A recent evaluation of the program found that every $1 invested in Focus on Energy generates more than $5 in benefits for Wisconsin, including economic benefits, reduced pollution and reduced energy costs.
